Rootsi Auto Motor & Sport annab teada, et Volvo on tühistanud plaani 2009. aastal müüki paisata II põlvkonna XC90. Väidetavalt olla otsus tehtud mõni päev tagasi ning isegi varustajad pole uudisest kuulnud.
Otsust mõjutasid mõningad faktorid: kaalu langetamise vajadusest tulenev uute materjalide hind; uute mootorite, käigukastide puudus; hübriid tehnoloogia puudumine. Polevat isegi start/stop tehnoloogiat. Ford ennustab USAs peamise konkurendi X5 müügi langust ning panustab konkurentsis püsimiseks uute, kütust säästvate ning hübriid tehnoloogial põhinevate mudelite turuletoomist.
2009. aastal tuleb XC90'l suuremat sorti facelift ning tootmine plaanitakse lõpetada 2012. Volvo keskendub uutele mudelitele XC60, pisemale XC50 ning võib-olla isegi XC30.

Volvo officials have replied to Auto Motor Sport Sweden with a brief statement that the XC90 facelift is indeed in development, however, the next generation XC90 has not been canceled. Although, it is still not confirmed, the new XC90 will most likely be built using a Ford platform to take advantage of cost savings in an effort to remain competitive as stated above. Volvo stresses that Ford does not dictate which models Volvo will build. They are more autonomous than ever and freely proceed with planning of new models with independence. By making a fresh start with a new platform, Volvo will lose a couple of life-cycle years for a new generation, but the benefits of having a more competitive model is worth the delay, especially with such an important vehicle as the XC90.
